Citi awarded Employer of Choice for Women in Australia for ninth consecutive year
Sydney, 23 March, 2011: "Addressing unconscious bias is a diversity initiative for many companies and one of the hardest to tackle," said Joanne Allen, Head of Human Resources for Citi in Australia and New Zealand. "However if we are to create a truly inclusive workplace it's an area our managers need to understand and manage," she said.
Diversity plans at Citi in 2011 include a focus on manager accountability and education. This will include training to address unconscious bias, build an engaged workforce, and redesign jobs to support flexible work arrangements.
"Managing unconscious bias has become a popular training program in the financial services industry," said Ms Allen. "Behavioural psychology tells us that even the most open-minded individuals have unconscious biases. It's important managers understand these and ensure they are not making decisions or creating processes based on over-generalisations or wrong assumptions."
Last month, Citi was awarded "Employer of Choice for Women" status for the ninth consecutive year by the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA). This award recognises companies that build cultures, programs and benefits to enable the advancement of women in the workplace.
Eighteen financial institutions received the citation this year with another 80 companies. Over 2,500 applied for the citation.
Ms Allen said, "We are proud to earn the award but realise it involves constant effort to improve diversity. Providing parental leave, childcare facilities and flexible workplace programs is no longer sufficient. We must begin to change mindsets, and this takes greater time and effort."
