Citibank retains 'Employer of Choice for Women' status
Sydney, 22 February 2005: Citibank has retained its 'Employer of Choice for Women' status for the third year in a row following the latest renewal process. Announced earlier this month, the awards recognise companies who build cultures that support and enable the advancement of women in the workplace by adapting to the specific needs of their female staff.
The 'Employer of Choice For Women' initiative began in 2001 when the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA) announced inaugural citations to 55 organisations. In 2005 the number of recipients has climbed to 115, highlighting the increased awareness around equal opportunity and issues facing women in the workplace.
John Eddy, Director of HR at Citibank said, "This is a highly prestigious award and one we are proud to have retained. Each year the bar is raised and the renewal process becomes more stringent. Companies need to show continuous improvement to retain their 'Employer of Choice for Women' status – there is no standing still.
"As part of our diversity banner, we see equal opportunity for women as a strong business opportunity – improving working relationships amongst our staff and developing a positive reputation for the company externally. This is particularly important in terms of attracting new employees. We want women to know that as an employee, their needs will be taken into consideration and hidden barriers, addressed."
Go behind the scenes at Citibank and you will find a business largely driven by women. Forty one per cent of Citibank's management/supervisors are women, and 17 per cent of the executive team are women, pointing to the success of the company's diversity policy.
As the key driver of the renewal process for the 'Employer of Choice for Women' status, Citibank's Nikki Grant-Cook is well placed to speak on behalf of the company's female base.
"Citibank is focused on introducing work practices that meet the needs of our female staff, providing a positive and flexible environment for them," said Ms Grant-Cook. "This includes access to a host of resources and initiatives such as parental leave, parental leave seminars, career planning workshops, flexible working arrangements and a series of Life Choice programs that raises awareness around work-life balance issues."
Ms Grant-Cook continued: "Recent research also showed that childcare is a burning issue for many staff, so we are planning to pilot employer sponsored childcare in Sydney and Melbourne. Initiatives such as this are all part of being an employer of choice for women."
